Mixmag Ibiza Interview

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a rally driver!

What’s the worse club you’ve been to?

A club called Rio’s. Its got a full-on stinky booze carpet, shitty mirrors, lasers bouncing everywhere and a well pokey sound system farting all night long.

What’s been your worst job?

Working as a kitchen porter in Cafe Rouge - it was pure bobbins! It bought me loads of records though.

What are you obsessed with right now?

Game of Thrones.

When and where were you happiest?

A few years ago with my girl in Tulum, Mexico having one of the most special moments of my life. Cheesy I know - but true!

How do you describe what you do to someone who doesn’t know you?

Ha, I don’t bother. If I have to, I tend to say I’m an artist rather than a DJ as otherwise, people assume I play bars or weddings. The other day I was telling a taxi driver I’d been playing at Glasto, he was a nice guy and he was asking me if it was my job… I was like ‘Yeah’, and he was like “So what sort of places do you play? Slug & Lettuce?”

Have you ever been arrested? And if so, what for?

Yes! I got arrested for stealing with my mates one day after school. I was bored and very young, and it’s just something stupid I did one day. My mother went fucking crazy, and grounded me for a long time!

What’s the best record ever made?

There isn’t one! One of my favourite records I’ve had out recently though was Talk Talk “It’s my Life”. It reminds me of a very special friend.

What’s the coolest thing in your house?

The party setting on my surround sound system!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever had?

Do what you want and really enjoy it. You have to live every experience to the best that you can; be sound to everyone you meet and spread good positive energy bubbles all around you.

Who’s your all-time hero and why?

My close friends and my family, I’ve learned everything from them, and I’m so thankful to be surrounded by so many amazing people.

What do you collect - apart from records?

Fridge magnets. Every new place I go, I always pick a magnet up. They’re small and cheap, and you can get them everywhere. Although I may need to get a bigger fridge…

What’s your vice?

Mezcal, A mexican drink in which you usually find a worm floating in the bottle.

Who was your first love, and what happened?

Probably back when I was at primary school. I think it was one of these primary school things where you ask the girl out, she says yes. but you go out for like two days and don’t speak to each other.

What’s your answer to everything?

It’ll be alright.

What’s your most prized possession that you’ve still got form when you ere a kid?

My Ghostbusters car. I wish I could still fit into it!

What was your last treat for yourself?

Mushroom chocolates on the beach yesterday morning with my dear friend Tristan da Cunha. We decided to steal a huge bean-bag, take it to the waterside and lie back on it with our feet hanging over the edge, in the sea. Proper tasty foot bathing after a night of raving.

What do you spend your money on?

On the good times.

What’s your drug of choice?

Probably mushroom chocolates

What can’t you live without?

Working out and my juiceer. A little routine is important for everyone, I think - it just depends what your routine is. Traveling around so much you can’t always give it your full attention, but when I do it really raises my energy levels.

Do you have recurring dreams?

I keep having the same dream that I’ve not finished my dissertation and that I’m going to fail uni. I wake up and realise that i did it years ago and got a 2:1. Buzzing.

If you had a Tardis, what time  would you go to?

I’d love to go check out how things went down with the dinosaurs.

Subb-An plays live at Fabric on September 27.
